ADC-ICC Asia-Pacific Commercial Mediation Competition 2022

On behalf of the Australian Disputes Centre and the International Chamber of Commerce, we extend a warm invitation to your University to compete in the 6th Annual ADC-ICC Asia Pacific Commercial Mediation Competition (APCMC) being held online from 28 – 30 August 2022.

The APCMC attracts student teams from leading Universities across Australia, Asia, the South Pacific, India, the Americas, and Africa. We hope that you can join us as a student competitor or as a volunteer mediator or judge.

Designed for Tomorrow’s Business Leaders and Legal Minds

The APCMC offers a challenging and inspiring opportunity that is open to all Law, Business and Social Science students. Through this Asia-Pacific competition, the ADC and ICC seek to empower tomorrow’s business leaders and legal minds, equipping them with skills to better meet the dispute resolution needs of international commerce, in an expanding and increasingly complex marketplace.

The competition facilitates students’ learning and their application of negotiation skills in a commercial mediation setting. Student negotiators seek to resolve moot problems involving international commercial law. They are mediated in the competition by professional mediators, and are adjudicated by a senior panel of ADR practitioners. The APCMC draws significant endorsement and support from leading ADR practitioners, jurists and academics from across the globe, and we thank them for their support.

A Place Reserved for Paris 2023

The Asia-Pacific competition is closely associated with the ICC Mediation Competition, Paris. By competing in the APCMC, Universities have the chance of winning a reserved place to compete in the 18th Annual ICC Mediation Competition in 2023. This is the world’s largest moot exclusively devoted to international commercial mediation.

Most recently were thrilled to see APCMC 2021 teams do so well in the recent 17th International Commercial Mediation Competition. Not for the first time has the University of Auckland taken home the title of reigning champion. Congratulations Auckland, our semi-finalist team, the University of New South Wales our 2021 winning team, the West Bengal University of Juridical Sciences, who were awarded ‘Distinction as Public Speaker’ in Paris. Well done to all teams on their tremendous efforts!

With your support for APCMC 2022, we are keen to replicate these and other outstanding achievements.

The key aims of the APCMC include:

  • Creating a unique opportunity for students to showcase their negotiation skills in a commercial mediation environment.
  • Developing skills in collaborative commercial problem solving, analytical judgment and persuasion.
  • Connecting aspiring students to strong professional networks.

Fairness, transparency, friendliness and fun are the hallmarks of this competition. The students’ learning and professional development is a cornerstone of the competition, while creating an engaging environment for connecting with peers and professionals.

APCMC-Online

The competition has been a tremendous success online, and in 2022 we are recreating this exciting experience for learning and networking. The competition is being hosted by the Australian Disputes Centre, using Zoom Professional.

Saving on time and travel costs, the online format also opens up a world of connectivity options; creating more compelling reasons for students to be part of APCMC 2022. This includes reprising our highly popular impromptu speech competition, running student webinars on skills and wellness, and offering a range of networking events for students and professionals.

APCMC has an easy online registration process. The one standard registration fee of AUD$1,100 (incl. GST) covers a full team of 4 students, plus 2 coaches. Universities are welcome to register more than one team.

Rules and Procedure

The Competition follows the well-established ICC International Commercial Mediation, which allow for students to exhibit their negotiation and mediation skills in a realistic mock commercial dispute. The competition problems are developed by professional mediators, and based on real international commercial disputes.

Teams of 2-4 students compete against each other in a series of competition rounds. Competing teams represent two sides of an international commercial dispute, with members assuming the roles of the Client and Counsel. A qualified professional mediates the dispute, and distinguished judges assess how well the teams have advanced their interests.

Full details of Competition procedure and judging criteria are available in the Competition Rules.
