CONTENTS: Word from the CEO ADR Address Product Launch Online Mediation Training Online Notification of Disputes ADC Spaces ADC-ICC Asia-Pacific Commercial Mediation Competition Dates for Your Diary Word from the CEO The winter weather has arrived a little early for many of us, but it hasn’t dampened the spirits of all those who are making good use of the lightening of lockdown restrictions. Released from zoom dinners, it is not just wining and dining that is inspiring us. Face-to-face mediations are also back on our list of things to do!
Yes, ADC’s Sydney Centre is back in full operation. With social distancing protocols in place ADC Sydney can accommodate groups of 2 to 19. Speak with us about your particular needs. The solution may include ADC Virtual or a hybrid of both.
We are keeping our mediation training and accreditation courses all online for the next few months. The Accelerated Online courses are a lot of fun and are being very well received.
Life has slowed somewhat, but the demand for more timely and cost-efficient dispute resolution remains. In response, I am thrilled to announce two new ‘sector focussed’ fast-track mediation services; one for Local Government and one for Financial Services Disputes. They include light-touch mediator appointments by ADC, preliminary conferences with the parties and an half-day mediation.
If you are an experienced mediator in either of these sectors and would like to be considered for the panels, please send us an expression of interest.
The NT may be out of their limited lockdown, but regrettably those of us to the south remain locked-out from where the sun is shining. While personally disappointing not to be in beautiful Darwin again, this lock-out has created a wonderful opportunity for us all!
Aboriginal Broadcasting Australia has generously picked up this year’s ADR Address at the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory. ADC will have it online this Thursday. Be sure not to miss Leanne Liddle’s tremendous call to action!
ADC is also calling out for Universities to register their teams in this year’s ADC-ICC Asia Pacific Commercial Mediation Competition. It too is happening online. If you are connected to a university in Australia or internationally, we would be thrilled if you can encourage them to field a team. We also have a call out for professional mediators and judges for the competition. Please see details and links in the Bulletin below.
For our mediators, arbitrators and all those wanting to learn more about ADR, ADC is building a brilliant line-up of winter webinars. Starting with eminent jurists and Professors Marilyn Warren and Clyde Croft, in conversation with fellow Monash academic Drossos Stamboulakis and ADC Director Bronwyn Lincoln on 16 June. Save the date and we’ll keep you posted when registrations open.
Last but not least, the lockdown has created the space for many of us to be more creative; more cooking, reading, painting, gardening and photography! We would love you to share your most inspirational photos for our ‘Lockdown Gallery’. Details below.
Deborah Lockhart Chief Executive Officer Leanne Liddle, Director Aboriginal Justice Unit, Northern Territory Broadcast on Television, Radio and Online: 2nd Annual ADR Address, Supreme Court Is Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Backyard Justice? Online on 28 May 2020 at 5.30pm AEST "Here in the Northern Territory we are privileged to have so many different Aboriginal people with different cultures within our borders. But sadly, as Aboriginal people, we have the highest imprisonment rates and numbers of court presentations in the nation.
Tackling the high levels of disparity between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people, particularly in the justice system, remains an ongoing challenge.
Alternative Dispute Resolution can play a key role in addressing these issues, but it requires practitioners to take a steady and sensible path away from romanticised generic views transcending the many invalid assumptions and arguments that have complicated the justice arena for decades.
This paper identifies some of these challenges and barriers for an Alternative Dispute Resolution model that if delivered, may change the destiny and history of Aboriginal people in the NT and deliver real justice in our backyard." – Leanne Liddle
ADC extends its warm thanks to Aboriginal Broadcasting Australia for their generous support in filming and broadcasting this event.
