Showcasing ADR,

Celebrating Excellence!

Dear Friends and Colleagues

Now in its 3rd year, the recent Australian ADR Awards were another great success. Nominations were received across 15 categories and the quality of work undertaken over the past 12 months was further testament to the depth of expertise within the Australian ADR industry. My warm congratulations to all nominees and ADR Award winners in 2018.

The Awards Gala Dinner at NSW Parliament House attracted many practitioners from across Australia. Guests were greeted by ADC’s Team Red and the 82-strong 'With One Voice' community choir, which opened the evening’s entertainment with gusto. Befitting the people’s house, choir members came from all walks of life to sing with great heart and infectious energy. My warm thanks to the choir and to ADC’s Team Red, which comprised our current and former interns who generously gave of their time, energy and enthusiasm to make the Gala Dinner a celebration for all.

My thanks to The Hon. Chris Finlayson QC for his insightful addresses at both the symposium and the dinner. Amusing us all with his self-deprecating humour, Chris is possibly the only New Zealander we know who is not enamoured with rugby!

Speaking from the vantage point of NSW’s former Attorney General, and with a close involvement in ADR institutions and mechanisms  since the mid 1980’s, The Hon. Justice Terry Sheahan AO eloquently spoke of the contribution of Sir Laurence Street to the development of ADR in Australia. Lady Penny Street and ADC’s Chairman, Mr John Wakefield, kindly presented the glass trophies for 2018.

Supporting the Awards’ celebrations again in 2018, acclaimed choirmaster and pianist Mr Robert Teicher brought Parliament’s grand piano to life with a tribute to Sir Laurence and - following a late dash from the Opera House - world renowned musician  William Barton gave an awe-inspiring performance to a standing audience.

Thank you again to everyone who supported the Australian ADR Awards in 2018. I hope to see you there next year.

Deborah Lockhart, CEO

Lessons from the New Zealand ADR Experience

The Hon. Christopher Finlayson QC’s insights as the Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations

“Many of the disputes arise because of personality differences and poor interpersonal relationships. I often quote former Northern Ireland Secretary Willy Whitelaw who would lament about meeting Catholics and Protestants in Belfast. He concluded some of them couldn’t even agree on what day it was.”

Dispute resolution and civil justice
– thriving through innovation

Professor Peta Spender, Deputy Dean of ANU Law School
