A key objective for ADC is to advance Australia’s ADR expertise internationally. Over the past year, ADC has been engaged in sharing the Australian mediation experience with colleagues in Latin America. As part of a series of recent engagements in Chile, I was honoured to speak at the Ministerio de Mineria in Santiago. This high-level ‘Conversatorio’ was hosted by the Chilean Mining Minister, Mrs Aurora Williams, and the Australian Ambassador for Chile, Mr Robert Fergusson.
We are thrilled to add a new South American perspective to our Legal Updates section. Gonzalo Vial, from Bulnes, Urrutia & Bustamante, Fulbright Scholar and a former ADC Researcher, is one of Chile’s leading Dispute Resolution lawyers and has now joined our Bulletin’s Legal Panel as a regular contributor.
Across Australia, excitement is mounting with less than two weeks remaining for you to nominate in the Australian ADR Awards. These Awards are open to all and recognise excellence in ADR in a broad range of categories. To inspire your nominations we have asked a couple of last year’s winners to say a few words on what their Award has meant to them. Unforseen benefits can happen! Do take a moment to read their comments and please get your nominations in early!
I look forward to celebrating your success and the success of all Australian ADR practitioners at the Awards Dinner on 10 August 2017. I am proud to announce that ADC’s inaugural Patron, The Hon. Robert French AC, will give the Keynote Address at the Awards dinner.

ADR Practice Group of the Year, 2016
"We were delighted to win ADR Practice Group of the Year in 2016. The Award was a powerful endorsement of our practice, being the result of a peer review process conducted by Australia's leading dispute resolution institution. It certainly resonated with our clients.
It was also great from an internal perspective, as preparing our submission made us sit down and think about all of the different disputes we worked on in the previous year, as well as our extensive thought leadership activities in ADR. We will definitely be entering again this year and I would encourage all other major ADR teams to do so."
Jonathan Carter,
Head of Legal, APRA AMCOS
ADR Corporate Team of the Year, 2016
“This Award meant an enormous amount to our organisation. We are very proud of the steps we have taken in recent years to provide our songwriter and music publisher members, as well as businesses large and small who use music as part of their operations, with an innovative, independent and cost effective dispute resolution service. Given that so many of our stakeholders are sole traders or small businesses, typically without recourse to expert assistance in dispute resolution, the Resolution Pathways facility is an incredibly important part of our service offering. Winning this award was a timely affirmation that the ADR facility we had worked so hard to implement was considered best practice by experts in the field. The Award has given us additional confidence to promote the facility to our membership and clients as a truly legitimate and cost effective process for resolving disputes.”
