ADC Bulletin – Issue 6 – September 2016
Vale David Newton
We are deeply saddened at the recent passing of David Newton, ADC’s first CEO. David’s skills and enthusiasm not only provided a strong foundation and springboard for ADC’s development from 1986, David went on to make a significant contribution to the development of ADR in Australia and Asia over the following three decades. David helped to develop many young ADR practitioners and his industry colleagues will miss his warmth, professionalism, keen insights and ever generous ear as a sounding board and mentor. A loving husband, father and grandfather and valued friend to so many, ADC staff and Board extend their sympathy to his family and friends for their loss. We know too that they will also be celebrating David’s life, so well lived for the benefit of all.

Celebrating in Support of Great Causes
From Sydney to London it has been the season for ADR practitioners and friends to celebrate in support of some very worthy causes. In August, ADC held Australia’s inaugural ADR Benefit Ball & Awards Night at the prestigious Australian Golf Club in Sydney in aid of our national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander scholarship programme. London followed in September with their bi-annual International Arbitration Charity Ball at the Guild Hall in support of Save the Children.

London’s event dwarfed Sydney in terms of size and masquerade masks, but not enthusiasm; with significant support from ADR practitioners, law firms, the Bar and friends in both hemispheres.

In celebration of its 30th Anniversary, ADC presented the Australian ADR Awards. The calibre of our Australian ADR practitioners was fully reflected in the quality of nominations. Our thanks to the judges for their generous support of these important awards and to all award nominees and winners; congratulations on your significant achievements through the application of ADR processes during the past year.

Also as part of its Anniversary celebration, ADC acknowledged the substantial contribution of Sir Laurence Street in the establishment of the Centre with Sir Laurence’s love of music to the fore at the Benefit Ball and Awards Night. Our warm thanks to Sir Laurence for his indefatigable support of Australian ADR and for sharing with us his love of Chopin and Noel Coward. We were honoured that Sir Laurence, Lady Street and their family could join us for the an evening of celebration.

In keeping with our theme of great events for great causes; Law Rocks again blasted London (‘unplugged’!) and Washington during September. The latent musical talent of our legal profession is breathtaking. Australia’s talented legal teams hit the stage in Sydney and Melbourne during October. I encourage everyone to support Law Rocks in Australia and their chosen charities.

Australian ADR Awards 2016

Justice Terry Sheahan noted by video on the evening, the vision of Sir Laurence proposing a commercial ADR centre was instrumental in establishing ADC (formally the Australian Commercial Disputes Centre) as the first independent ADR organisation in Australia.
